In July 2022, Task Force 141 operated under the command of American General Shepard, conducting targeted strikes against Russian-backed Iranian forces. After the assassination of Iranian General Ghorbrani, Quds Force Major Ghassan Ziyani became the new leader and, over the next several months, became involved in financing Al-Qatala´s terrorist activities. His actions attracted the attention of Shepard and CIA Agent Kate Laswell, who ordered a Marine squad led by Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley and Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish to apprehend Ghassan in Al-Mazra. The team failed to capture Ghassan, but discovered that the terrorists possessed a US-made ballistic missile.
