This is not just another game, but an ambitious shareware (free-to-start) battle simulator, on which the specially created studio The Pokémon Works worked together with veterans from Game Freak.

There is nothing left until the release on Nintendo Switch - the game comes out this Wednesday, April 8 2026 Let's see why this project is being discussed by the entire community.

Welcome to Frontier City

Forget about long journeys through forests and fields. Pokémon Champions is a pure competitive hub where the focus is on PvP battles. The technological metropolis of Frontier City has become the center of life.

In the trailer, we were introduced to two key characters:

Kajima is the mayor of the city, whose goal is to turn Pokemon battles into a world-class sport.

Caraway is the owner of the Battle Arena, who will monitor your progress in the rankings and leagues.

Old friends in a new format

The main feature for experienced fans is full integration with Pokémon Home. You'll be able to transfer the teams you've been building over the years (Pokémon Legends: Z-Asupport included!). If you are a beginner, the game has a Recruiting system: use special in-game tickets to assemble a combat squad from scratch.

How does it work and how much does it cost?

The game works according to the free-to-start model. Progress is tied to Victory Points - by earning them in matches, you can customize the characteristics, sets of attacks and characters of your Pokemon.

For those who want more, a Paid Starter Set is offered. It includes additional storage space and exclusive cosmetics in the nostalgic style of Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

Future technologies: Switch 2 and cross-play

Although the game is released on the standard Switch, the developers have prepared a gift for owners of the next generation of consoles. On the day of release, a free update will be released for Nintendo Switch 2: they promise to improve textures and increase frame rates.

What about mobile gamers? The smartphone version is confirmed for the second half of2026. A nice bonus: full crossplay and general progress between all platforms will work.

Why is this important?

Pokémon Champions is a signal of a serious change in strategy. The creation of a separate studio, The Pokémon Works, suggests that they now want to completely separate the competitive scene from traditional story-based RPGs. Will this“service” modelbe the future of the franchise? We'll find out on April 8!
