Abstract
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered will be released on November 3, 2026 on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S
The game retains the original animations from the 2002 version, but updates models, textures, lighting and visuals effects
The developers have removed the character Hedorah (Smog Monster) from the list of playable fighters
The choice of the November 3 date is associated with “Godzilla Day” - the day of release of new Toho films in Japan
The project is described as a 40% remaster and 60% new content
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is not just a graphical update of the 2002 classic, but a carefully thought-out project that balances staying true to the original while incorporating modern improvements. In a recent interview with IGN, senior designer Simon Strange revealed details of the development of this highly anticipated remaster.
According to Strange, the Pipeworks team has put significant effort into maintaining the authentic feel of the original game. “All the character animations are exactly the same as the 2002 original,” he explains. This decision was made after careful consideration of fan feedback, which emphasized the importance of maintaining the unique style of movement and combat that made the original version special.
However, the game's visuals have undergone significant updates. All 3D models, textures, lighting systems and visual effects were recreated using the state-of-the-art Unreal Engine. This allowed us to significantly improve the graphics, while maintaining the spirit and gameplay of the original.
One of the most discussed decisions was the exclusion of the character Hedorah (also known as the Smog Monster) from the roster of playable fighters. Strange explained that this decision was made after internal discussions about roster balance and the desired direction for the series. “We wanted to focus on the core of franquicia and provide a diverse but balanced cast of characters,” the designer noted.
Particular attention in the interview was paid to the choice of release date - November 3, 2026. Strange revealed that this date coincides with "Godzilla Day," the traditional day when Toho releases new films about the famous monster. "It was important to us to release the game on this symbolic day to honor the franchise's legacy and connection to the original films," Strange shared. Interestingly, despite online discussions about potential competition with Grand Theft Auto 6 (which also releases in November 2026), the developers state that the choice of date was purely due to the symbolic connection to the Godzilla franchise, rather than market considerations. “We didn't even look at other games' release calendars when choosing the date,” states Strange.
Technically, the project is an interesting hybrid: approximately 40% of the content is directly carried over from the original game (primarily animations and audio), while the remaining 60% represents new developments, including updated graphics, redesigned interfaces and additional content. This approach has resulted in a product that both satisfies the nostalgia of long-term fans and attracts new players with a modern execution.
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered will be available for purchase digitally on all platforms, as well as a physical edition for Nintendo Switch 2 (on cartridge) and PlayStation 5. Pre-orders will begin several weeks before launch, with an official release on November 3, 2026.
