Modder nicklovin99 has released an ambitious overhaul titled enRAGE — Living World and Nemesis System on Nexus Mods for the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Currently in Early Access, the project brings a deep, unscripted Nemesis mechanic inspired by Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War into Rockstar's Story Mode, transforming the frontier into a persistent ecosystem with NPC memory, blood feuds, and dynamic faction warfare.
Every Stranger Has a Name, Biography, and Temper
Unlike the vanilla game where random passersby vanish once out of sight, greeting a stranger in enRAGE reveals their name and unlocks a dedicated character dossier in the mod menu. Every individual features a procedural yet persistent profile:
Tempers and Traits: NPCs are assigned distinct personalities—Hothead, Proud, Cold, Coward, Greedy, Loyal, or Drifter—which dictate how they fight, whether they fold under interrogation, and whether they forgive past slights.
Dated Life Stories: Backstories are anchored to historical in-game years, including service in the War between the States, the plains campaigns, the Panic of '93, sentences in Sisika Penitentiary, or labor in the Annesburg mines and Saint Denis docks.
Family Ties and Mental State: Citizens have brothers, cousins, sons, and friends who also exist on the world roster. Dynamic needs, stress levels, and ambitions shift over time—pushing a stressed outlaw to snap in camp or abandon the criminal life entirely.
"Rob a man, beat him, insult him or shoot his horse, and he may not forget. He has a name, a temper, a family and a life story that reaches back years before he met you, and one day he comes looking for you," explains mod creator nicklovin99.
How the Nemesis System Works: Scars, Crippling Injuries, and Blood Feuds
Every interaction adds to or reduces an NPC's hidden grudge score. Insults, stick-ups, hogtying, horse theft, and killing allies push strangers past their breaking point, turning them into a persistent Nemesis:
Three Tiers of Hatred: Hostility escalates from Resentful (fistfights) to Vengeful (knives and sidearms) and Murderous (ambushes on the road, ridge snipers, or hired bounty hunters if the enemy is a coward).
Masks and Witnesses: Wearing a mask or bandana prevents victims from learning your identity—unless you remove it in front of a witness.
Permanent Scars and Limps: A nemesis who survives a shootout returns scarred and angrier. A shot to the spine can cripple an enemy permanently, leaving him with a lifelong limp or laid up at the local doctor's office or saloon.
Kin Vengeance and Funerals: Relatives and gangmates learn of a man's death within hours or days. Outfits hold five-hour graveside funerals the day after an officer falls (up to three coffins per service), complete with schedules printed in the local newspaper's Funeral Notices box.
Eight Factions, Treasuries, Supply Lines, and Unscripted Gang Wars
In 1899, eight factions contest the map under their canonical leaders: the O'Driscoll Boys (Colm O'Driscoll), Lemoyne Raiders (Lindsey Wofford), U.S. Army (Colonel Favours), Wapiti (Rains Fall), Bronte Family (Angelo Bronte), Murfree Brood, Skinner Brothers, and the Klan, each structured with three tiers of officers and rank-and-file riders.
Real Economy and Territory: Every outfit tracks actual manpower, cash, and supplies. Each faction guards a dedicated treasury camp (with strongboxes) and a supply camp (with crates and wagons). Burning an outfit's supply crates leaves its men poorly armed and unable to wage war.
Leadership Shake-Ups: Every few days, outfits promote ambitious survivors to fill vacant officer seats. If a faction leader is killed or captured, an heir takes command within one to four days.
Dynamic Front Lines: Wars erupt organically over shared districts and flashpoints. Warring factions set up roadblocks, clash in distant battles heard across the hills at night, and have their five-day battle chronicles reported in local newspapers.
Fear-Based Interrogation: Players can hogtie or hold enemies at gunpoint to extract secrets—such as an officer's weekly saloon routine or treasury locations—though captives may lie to lure you into an ambush.
Update 0.9.5: Full 1907 Epilogue and New Austin Support
Released on October 18, 2026, patch v0.9.5 introduces seamless support for the 1907 Epilogue as John Marston and expands operations across New Austin:
Eight Years Later Transition: Loading into the Epilogue advances the world to 1907 with an "Eight years later" chronicle marker detailing what happened to every 1899 NPC (deaths, prison terms in Sisika, deputy badges, or promotions), while resetting Arthur's personal grudges and preserving 1899 saves separately.
New 1907 Outfits: As the O'Driscolls, Bronte Family, and Wapiti depart, the Laramie Gang, Del Lobo Gang, and silent Night Folk take over the frontier alongside new 1907 leaders.
Ten Custom Lived-In Camps: New hand-placed camps across Hennigan's Stead, Cholla Springs, Gaptooth Ridge, Rio Bravo, Tall Trees, and Roanoke Ridge feature faction-specific props, from Raider moonshine stills to Laramie chuckwagons.
