Ubisoft says goodbye to a “cozy” future: the Alterra project is canceled

The main news of the day, which is now being actively discussed on the Internet, is the closure of the ambitious, but never officially presented project Alterra. Ubisoft Montreal has been secretly working on this “cozy” life and crafting simulator for almost two years.

What do we know about Alterra? The game was conceived as Ubisoft's answer to such mastodons as Minecraft and Animal Crossing. The developers used a voxel style, and the gameplay combined social interaction with a deep building system. Players would explore a variety of biomes and interact with unusual NPCs called "Matterlings".

Interestingly, the creative process was led by Patrick Redding, the man who brought us Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Gotham Knights. It would seem that the project is in good hands, but the company's strategy has changed.

Why was the project closed? Ubisoft explained this decision with a “portfolio management approach.” To put it simply: the company decided to return to its “main pillars” - proven franchises like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry, instead of experimenting in new genres.

What will happen to the developers? There is a positive aspect here. Contrary to the sad trends of recent years, the cancellation of the game did not lead to layoffs. Yesterday, Ubisoft Montreal employees were even sent home early, and now they are being assigned to other priority projects of the studio.

By the way, this news came just a day before another important event: tomorrow, April 23, the world premiere of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced will take place. It seems that Ubisoft has finally decided to bet on its main hits.

Briefly about other important events on April 22:

Splatoon Raiders is coming: Nintendo pleased fans with a fresh trailer for the single spin-off Splatoon Raiders. Save the date: the game will be released on July 23, 2026exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.

Peter Molyneux is back in action: The legendary developer has returned to the god simulator genre. Today his new game Masters of Albion was officially released on PC. Let's see if the master will be able to revolutionize the genre again.

New players on the market: Japanese giants Toei (known for their films) and Sanrio (owners of the Hello Kitty brand) announced the creation of their own gaming divisions. Now they will independently develop projects based on their famous franchises.

It was a busy day! Stay tuned for tomorrow's announcement of the updated Black Flag.
